NDI Hardware Buying Guide
1. Full NDI or NDI HX?
The single most important spec. Full NDI High Bandwidth (BirdDog, Science Image, Vizrt Connect Solo, Magewell Pro Convert) delivers visually lossless video at ~140 Mbps per 1080p60 stream. NDI HX/HX3 (Kiloview N2, Magewell Ultra Encode, Vizrt Connect Spark) works over 1 GbE with very low latency — ideal when bandwidth is constrained.
2. SDI or HDMI Input?
Broadcast cameras typically output SDI; consumer cameras, computers, and capture cards use HDMI. Bi-directional devices like the BirdDog Studio NDI and Kiloview N20 support both interfaces simultaneously.
3. Encoder, Decoder, or Bi-Directional?
For fixed workflows (cameras → network → displays), separate encoders and decoders are fine. For flexible setups, bi-directional converters (BirdDog 4K family, Kiloview N20, Vizrt Connect Solo, Science Image) let you repurpose hardware without replacing it.
Network Planning — Full NDI HB requires 10 GbE for multiple streams: Each 1080p60 Full NDI stream uses ~140 Mbps, and 4K/60 uses ~560 Mbps. A single 1 GbE link can carry 6–7 simultaneous 1080p streams at most. If you are running more than 4–5 Full NDI sources simultaneously, or any 4K Full NDI, a 10 GbE backbone switch is essential. NDI HX3 streams (~25–50 Mbps each) work comfortably over 1 GbE for most multi-camera setups.
4. Power Options
