Key Features

Why broadcast engineers choose the Ethernet Switch 820

Five reasons this is not your average data-center switch — and why that distinction matters the moment you go live.

01
8 × 100G QSFP28 Ports — Extreme Throughput for Any IP Video Workflow
Eight independent 100G connections deliver the raw bandwidth needed for simultaneous 4K SMPTE-2110 streams, large ISO recording arrays, and Blackmagic Cloud Store Ultra — all without saturating the fabric or dropping frames under full production load.
02
NMOS Auto-Discovery — Plug In a Device, Route It Instantly
A dedicated 1G NMOS control port keeps management traffic completely off your media network. When a new SMPTE-2110 device connects, NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 register it automatically — no IT technician, no manual IP configuration. It just appears in your routing list.
03
Dual Redundant PTP Clock Inputs — SMPTE-2110 Sync That Never Drops
Two independent PTP Ethernet ports maintain IEEE 1588-2008 v2 precision timing across your entire IP infrastructure. Connect two grandmaster clocks and the 820 fails over silently the instant one goes down mid-broadcast. Not a single frame glitches on air.
04
Dual Redundant Power Supplies — Live Production Insurance Built In
Two internal 100–240V PSUs with separate IEC C14 inputs mean a power supply failure is an event, not a show-stopper. Six cooling fans in a quiet front-to-back design keep the unit cool enough for OB trucks and studio mini-racks without sacrificing thermal headroom under load.
05
Real-Time Port Monitoring — See Bandwidth Problems Before They Hit Your Record
A built-in 2110 IP monitor output at 1080p50/59.94/60 displays live bandwidth graphs for every port on any connected display. Spot saturation, data stalls, and link errors in real time — straight from the front of the rack, no software required.

Port Architecture

Every port has a dedicated job. None share bandwidth.

Unlike IT switches where management and media compete for the same fabric, the 820 isolates every traffic class into its own dedicated lane.

1G
Management Port
Runs Blackmagic Ethernet Utility for status monitoring and firmware updates. Completely isolated from video, audio, and control traffic. Free download for Mac and Windows.
1G
NMOS Control Port
Dedicated IS-04 / IS-05 NMOS control lane. New SMPTE-2110 devices auto-register the moment they connect — no manual routing setup or complex IT knowledge required.
×2
PTP Clock Ports
Dual redundant RJ-45 PTP inputs supporting IEEE 1588-2008 v2, ST 2059-1, and ST 2059-2. Silent failover to a second grandmaster clock during cable faults or equipment failures.
10G
2 × 10G Ethernet
Standard RJ-45 ports for workstations and lower-bandwidth gear. Supports HyperDeck Extreme 8K — four simultaneous video channels over a single 10G connection.
100G
8 × 100G QSFP28
Ultra-fast QSFP28 sockets for HyperDeck ISO Recorder 100G, Blackmagic Cloud Store Ultra, and ATEM Constellation IP switchers — connected over optical fiber.
OUT
2110 IP Monitor Out
Live 1080p bandwidth graph for all ports on any connected display — shows switch name, link speed, and real-time data transfer rates without any software.
Full Description

Designed for the demands of live broadcast

Every design decision on the 820 starts with one question: what happens when the show is live and something fails?

No IT team. No complex setup.

Most broadcast engineers dread the SMPTE-2110 configuration rabbit hole — IGMP snooping, VLAN tagging, multicast settings managed by someone in another building. The 820 sidesteps that entirely. NMOS IS-04 handles device discovery automatically. Plug in a new 2110 camera and it appears in your routing list within seconds. The front-panel LCD and spin knob handle source and destination assignment without opening a laptop. That is not a simplified workflow — it is the right workflow.

Cable management built for real racks.

Every network connection on the 820 sits on the rear panel — the same side as your broadcast gear. This sounds obvious until you are looming a broadcast truck at midnight with 40 cables and no room to maneuver. Rear-facing ports mean your looms stay clean and your front panel stays readable under pressure. Front-to-back cooling means you are not blowing hot air onto adjacent gear in a tight rack — a detail that matters in OB vehicles where space is money.

Built for ISO recording and all-IP storage.

Connect HyperDeck ISO Recorder 100G units directly to the eight QSFP28 ports for massive simultaneous recording bandwidth. Add a Blackmagic Cloud Store Ultra on the same 100G fabric for real-time storage access across multiple DaVinci Resolve workstations. The 10G RJ-45 ports handle lower-bandwidth connections — HyperDeck Extreme 8K records four simultaneous video channels over a single 10G link. The 820 is the hub that makes an all-IP live and post-production workflow possible in a single 1RU unit.

Redundancy at every critical point.

Dual power supplies mean one PSU failure is an event, not a crisis. Dual PTP clock inputs mean a grandmaster failure does not take your timing down with it — the 820 fails over silently. Six cooling fans provide airflow redundancy so a single fan failure does not cause thermal shutdown mid-broadcast. The dedicated management port keeps admin traffic completely isolated from your media network so a firmware update during a show never competes with your video signal for bandwidth.
