Why this switcher is different

Built for IP from the ground up — not adapted from SDI

Most IP switchers bolt Ethernet onto an SDI architecture. Blackmagic started fresh. The ATEM 4 M/E Constellation IP is a native SMPTE-2110 production switcher designed for facilities already running IP infrastructure — or actively making the move — without forcing you to abandon what you already own.

Broadcast Live events TOC / production truck Sports News

In the real world, live production is rarely as clean as the spec sheet suggests. Remote feeds arrive at the wrong frame rate. A sponsor's graphics box outputs 1080i when your switcher is running 2160p60. Clients in different countries send different standards. These are Tuesday problems.

Every input on the ATEM 4 M/E Constellation IP has its own dedicated hardware standards converter. Route anything in — the switcher handles conversion automatically. No patching, no workarounds, no dead air.

Rather than just adding a lot of 10G Ethernet connections, we realized we needed a whole new design. Four cables replaces 60 separate BNC cables on an SDI switcher — it's amazing.

Key capabilities

What broadcast engineers care about

Every feature is included. No usage tiers, no license add-ons, no per-seat charges. This is what you get from day one.

SMPTE-2022-7 seamless switching
Two identical streams travel separate network paths. The switcher compares RTP packet sequences in real time and uses the first valid frame. A cable fails mid-broadcast — you never see it.
Per-input standards conversion
Every input has dedicated hardware conversion. Route 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 2160p sources simultaneously — the switcher normalizes all of them without any external converters.
Fairlight Live audio
Full SMPTE-2110 audio mixing via USB. Multiple talkback buses, camera and engineering loops, commentator mixes, AFL/PFL solo, third-party plug-ins, and immersive audio — all included.
4 customizable multi-views
Four independent multi-views let different operators monitor different source groupings simultaneously. Fully configurable from ATEM Software Control.
SDI bridge — no rip and replace
Connect a Blackmagic SDI Expander 8x12G to keep talkback, tally, camera control, and program return running to your existing SDI cameras during a phased IP migration.
Front-to-back cooling
Four quiet fans, front-to-back airflow, front panel LCD for status and settings, integrated headphone jack, and built-in speaker for local program monitoring. Designed for a real TOC rack.
Everything included — no hidden charges
ATEM Software Control for Mac and Windows
4 ATEM Advanced Chroma Keys per M/E row
Mix, wipe, DVE, and stinger transitions
2 × SuperSource, each with 4 DVEs
USB webcam output — all video software supported
Professional talkback — ClearCom and RTS compatible
Internal media for stills and motion graphics
Compatible with ATEM Monitoring Panel and Camera Control

Common questions

What engineers ask before they spec it

Can I mix SDI and SMPTE-2110 sources at the same time?
Yes. Add a Blackmagic SDI Expander 8x12G and you can route 12G-SDI sources alongside your IP inputs. The expander also passes talkback, tally, and camera control back to SDI cameras — so your existing camera fleet keeps working during a phased migration.
What network switch do I need?
You need a 100G-capable managed switch that supports IGMP multicast. For full SMPTE-2022-7 redundancy, connect each dual-port 100G pair to two separate switches. Arista, Cisco Nexus, and Mellanox Spectrum are commonly used in professional broadcast IP infrastructure at this scale.
What video standards does it support?
720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 2160p up to 60p. Per-input standards converters mean you can receive sources in any of these formats simultaneously — the switcher normalizes everything to your working standard automatically.
How does talkback work with the Fairlight Live integration?
Fairlight Live gives you multiple independent talkback buses beyond the built-in 2-channel talkback on channels 15 and 16. You can create separate camera loops, engineering loops, and commentator buses — all routed from Fairlight Live and sent as ATEM special outputs to the relevant cameras or production positions.
Is ATEM Software Control included at no extra cost?
Yes — free for Mac and Windows, always. Every feature is included in the hardware price with no ongoing software subscriptions, no per-seat licensing, and no usage-based charges.
