Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve 18 Released

Blackmagic Design officially revealed DaVinci Resolve 18, a significant new cloud collaboration update that enables multiple editors, colorists, visual effects artists, and audio engineers to work concurrently on the same project, on the same timeline, from any location in the world. DaVinci Resolve 18 now includes support for hosting and sharing projects on the Blackmagic Cloud, as well as a new DaVinci proxy workflow. Additionally, this update includes new Resolve FX AI tools powered by the DaVinci Neural Engine, as well as time-saving editor tools, Fairlight legacy fixed bus to FlexBus conversion and GPU-accelerated paint in Fusion.

The public beta version of DaVinci Resolve 18 is now available for download from the Blackmagic Design website.

DaVinci Resolve 18 is a significant release that introduces cloud-based workflows for a new type of remote collaboration. Customers can use Blackmagic Cloud to host project libraries and collaborate in real-time with multiple users globally on the same timeline. For a more efficient editing workflow, the new Blackmagic Proxy generator automatically creates proxies linked to camera originals. There are several new Resolve effects, including ultra beauty and 3D depth map, enhanced subtitling for editors, GPU-accelerated Fusion paint and real-time title template playback, and Fairlight fixed to FlexBus conversion.

DaVinci Resolve 18 includes support for Blackmagic Cloud, allowing customers to host their project libraries in the cloud using the DaVinci Resolve Project Server. Share projects and collaborate remotely with editors, colorists, VFX artists, and audio engineers on the same project.

The new Blackmagic Proxy Generator App creates and manages proxies based on camera originals automatically. Create a watch folder, and new media will be automatically converted to H.264, H.265 or Apple ProRes proxies, which will speed up editing workflows. Customers have the option of extracting proxies into a separate folder for offline use.

Customers can easily toggle between original camera footage and proxies with a single click. DaVinci Resolve knows where to find Blackmagic Proxy Generated proxies in the file tree, instantly linking to the camera originals in the media pool. To grade, edit with proxies and then relink to the camera originals.

DaVinci Resolve 18 introduces intelligent media location management, allowing customers to quickly associate media with their unique file paths when collaborating. Customers are no longer required to manually relink or search for assets when working remotely.

Additionally, the collaboration update provides significant performance improvements for customers who connect via a secure private network. When collaborating on a remotely hosted project library, receive immediate updates on editorial and color changes. Now, based on the most recent changes, creative decisions can be made in real time.

They can live stream their DaVinci Resolve Studio viewer to a remote computer monitor or a reference grading monitor from anywhere in the world via DeckLink. The low latency, high-quality 12-bit image is ideal for remote editing or color grading, allowing customers to see changes immediately.

DaVinci Resolve 18 introduces incredible new colorist tools. The new object mask, which is located in the magic mask palette, is capable of recognizing and tracking the movement of thousands of unique objects. Animals, vehicles, people, and food, among countless other elements, are intuitively isolated by the DaVinci Neural Engine for advanced secondary grading and effect application.

Customers can now instantly generate a 3D depth matte of a scene in order to quickly grade the foreground separately from the background, and vice versa. Customers can draw attention to foreground action, assist interview subjects in standing out, or add atmosphere to a scene's background.

With the surface tracker, apply graphics to surfaces that warp or change perspective dramatically, such as t-shirts, flags, or even the side of a face. Its adaptable mesh mimics the movement of a textured surface. With this powerful tracking tool, you can apply graphics, composite tattoos, or even cover up logos.

When performing corrective beauty work on a subject, ultra beauty gives customers advanced control over the subject. Developed in collaboration with professional colorists, the ultra beauty tool aids in the correction of general flaws by smoothing the skin and then recovering detail to produce natural, complimentary results to the subject.

Subtitle support has been enhanced to include timed text in TTML and XML formats, as well as embedded MXF/IMF subtitles. Subtitles can be viewed and imported from media storage, regions can be created to support multiple concurrent captions per track, and individual presets and text positions can be set when indicating different speakers.

Transitions in the shape, iris, and wipe categories of the effects library now include a checkbox that enables customers to easily reverse the direction of the transition. This increases the flexibility of customers when utilizing these types of transitions, as well as their creative possibilities.

Customers can now view up to 25 different angles in a single multicam clip simultaneously using the new 5x5 option in the multicam viewer. This is ideal for large multicam projects because it simplifies viewing, cutting, and switching between additional angles by eliminating the need to navigate between pages.

GPU acceleration enables the generation and display of paint brush strokes in real time in DaVinci Resolve 18, allowing for a more intuitive approach when performing cover up work or graphic design. Customers can instantly assess their work and make corrections in any stroke style or shape.

In DaVinci Resolve 18, the speed and playback performance of text, text+, and shape templates have been improved. Fusion templates now run up to 200 percent faster due to improved memory management and data handling. Customers can now view accelerated results in the viewer and quickly assemble motion graphic compositions.

FlexBus is Fairlight’s flexible audio busing and routing system designed for managing high track counts, extensive plug-in processing, perfect synchronization and multiple project deliverables. With a single click, customers can convert legacy fixed bus Fairlight projects to FlexBus.

The Dolby Atmos deliverable toolset has been expanded to support rendering of a binaural output from a complex Dolby Atmos mix. Now a Dolby 7.1.4 mix can be rendered to playback in a pair of headphones while maintaining the immersive sound experience from just two audio channels.

New options in the decompose menu enhance collaboration allowing editors to compile their work to a single timeline. Nested timelines can now be decomposed into individual tracks, complete with effects and automation. Assignments will connect via new busses, existing paths, or unpatched new tracks.

DaVinci Resolve supports the latest industry standard audio formats natively, including immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos, Auro 3D, MPEG-H, NHK 22.2, and SMPTE. The space view scope displays a real time view of every object and its relationship to the room and other objects in 3D space.
