The Blackmagic Design ATEM Microphone Converter enables the connection of severals microphones or external audio mixer sources can now be added to the ATEM Television Studio switchers' MADI input with relative ease. The ATEM Microphone Converter connects effortlessly to the ATEM Television Studio's MADI interface, needing no configuration and allowing multiple units to be daisy-chained for additional sources. Four mic/line selectable analog inputs with phantom power are available on each converter. The design provides great audio quality with a very low noise floor, a wide dynamic range, and minimal distortion. The design incorporates eight separate ADCs for each input, all of which collaborate to boost dynamic range! Moreover, there is an HDMI monitoring output with scrolling audio waveforms.

High End Converter Style Design
The ATEM Microphone Converter has a familiar converter-based design with room for the analog electronics needed for high-quality analog-to-digital audio conversion (ADC). It has XLR and TRS input sockets that can be used with either XLR or jack cables. It also has a MADI output for the converted audio and a MADI input that lets more than 4 channels of audio be put into a single MADI connection by connecting multiple ATEM Microphone Converters in a chain. There is also a power connection for 12V DC, as well as USB and Ethernet for remote software updates and admin. Switches let you change the volume of the mic or line input and turn on phantom power.

Connects via MADI for Multi Channel Audio
Multichannel Audio Digital Interface, or MADI, is a link for multiple channels of digital audio. It has been standardized by the Audio Engineering Society (AES) as AES10, and it specifies the data format for an interface for multiple channels of digital audio. The 4 analog inputs from the ATEM Microphone Converter are embedded in the MADI output as MADI channels 1, 2, 3, and 4. ATEM Microphone Converter also has a MADI input, which can be used to connect more than 4 audio channels on a single MADI link to more than one converter. This means that if a second converter is connected to the input of a first converter, the upstream converter's four channels will go on top of the downstream converter's four channels.

Innovative Analog to Digital Conversion
Each analog input channel has a fixed-gain, ultra-low-noise preamplifier that is sized to drive a high dynamic range audio ADC. This eliminates the need for an analog microphone preamplifier in the design, so the input doesn't have clicks or "zipper noise" from the preamp gain step. The ATEM Microphone Converter goes against the norm in the audio industry, which is to use one audio ADC for each input. Instead, it uses 8 high dynamic range audio ADCs that work together as one ultra high dynamic range audio ADC for each input. This means that the dynamic range of each input channel is a huge 131dB. (A). Plus, the amount of distortion is only 0.002%, which is very low.

Extremely Low -129dBV Noise Floor
A common problem with mic converters is that they have a higher noise floor, which means that the preamplifiers make more electrical noise. This problem is solved by the ATEM Microphone Converter, which has a very different design. The input is directly converted using its ultra high dynamic range conversion, so you can send RAW audio to the switcher. The switcher can then add as much gain as needed to get the right audio level. This means that noise isn't added by an analog gain stage, so the noise floor is always a very low -129dBV no matter how much digital gain is used. Then, you can use digital gain control, which is done in tiny, inaudible steps of 0.1dB.

Digital Preamplifier Design for Stability
With a wide dynamic range input, which gets rid of the need for an analog preamplifier, the microphone levels are changed by a very stable digital preamplifier gain stage. Analog audio levels can vary a lot between microphone types and brands, so this digital gain stage lets you adjust for the brand of microphone you use. Best of all, the digital preamplifier works with the full 32-bit RAW audio bit depth, so you can make adjustments with much more accuracy than the MADI audio standard allows. This makes for a gain stage that is very clean and free of noise. Then, you can fine-tune the final levels as you work on the ATEM audio mixer.

Precisely Matched Analog Inputs
The ATEM Microphone Converter's innovative design also has other benefits, such as a very precise match between the audio channels that are being input. With the multi ADC per input design method, each analog audio input has very similar specifications and tolerances. This makes all input channels statistically more similar. Plus, the unique 8 ADC input design will keep the noise floor stable and flat, and it won't have the problems that traditional staggered ADC designs have with noise floor level modulation. This means that the microphone works the same no matter what input you plug it into or how many ATEM Microphone Converters you use.

HDMI Monitoring with Scrolling Audio Wave forms
ATEM Microphone Converter also has an HDMI video monitoring output, so you can connect a simple TV or computer monitor to get a full status display. It shows 4 waveforms that have changed over the last 60 seconds. This is both interesting and fun to watch. There are also audio meters that show the level at the input connector. The software utility also lets you set a custom label for each channel. There are also lights that show what the switches for mic/line input and phantom power are set to. Also, if you connect converters in a "daisy chain," the monitoring output will change to show more than 4 channels. You can even choose a name for the converter that will show up on the monitoring!
