REV PRO disks deliver the portability and cost-effectiveness of a video tape with the speed, flexibility, and ease of use of nonlinear, random access media. REV PRO delivers real-time recording and playback with a minimum total sustained data rate of 110Mbps to support a single stream of high-definition (HD) video or two simultaneous streams of standard-definition (SD) video. With a storage capacity of 35GB per disk, REV PRO offers approximately 45 minutes of high-quality HD video or more than two hours of SD video. In addition, REV PRO features enhanced security, providing password protection of content.

REV PRO is ideal for video recording and playback, but it can also do much more, such as project management, content distribution and archiving. Since nonlinear editors view REV PRO disks as hard drives, data can be captured directly onto a REV PRO disk. Both footage and edited pieces can be saved on the same media, along with any associated project files and media assets for complete portability.

The REV technology is unique in incorporating the disk and motor in a sealed cartridge, with the heads and all associated electronics in the drive. REV PRO Disk Performance
REV PRO is specified for continuous delivery of real-time video streams. The 110Mbps data rates and built-in multi-segment caching system allows for simultaneous write and read operations of 55Mbps video streams with attached audio. This can be achieved on the same media that the original content was captured or created without having to ingest or copy to and from a second media source.

The dual stream performance of REV PRO is a primary differentiating factor over standard REV. Assume that a content creator (a videographer) is editing a video project using HDV. HDV is a tape-based format that has HD resolution video encoded at up to 25Mbps in an MPEG-2 format. The videographer digitizes the content into an NLE, such as EDIUS, Apple Final Cut Pro, Avid Xpress, etc., directly onto the REV PRO drive (remember, it appears as just a disk drive). When the editor wants to create a transition between two video clips (such as a dissolve), two streams of video must be played out simultaneously during the dissolve. REV PRO is able to play out two streams of video up to 55Mbps each.

Use REV PRO for Archiving and Backup
Because REV PRO disks behave like hard drives, files can be copied much faster than videotape-up to 200 Mb/s in file transfer mode. REV PRO is ideal for archiving other files associated with the project such as e-mail, scripts, still shots, graphics, research documents, and so on. It can even be used for backup of computer files, hard drives, or standard REV disks. The high bandwidth of REV PRO means that, at its average data rate, a full disk (35GB of content) can be copied to another medium in less than 45 minutes. That is more than twice the speed of other external storage solutions.

Digital Media Removability and Portability
The ability to remove and install the REV PRO Media theoretically creates a system of infinite storage capability and allows for different projects to be managed on dedicated media. Removable media is the primary requirement for portability and is a critical feature for safe and secure backup and archival storage. REV PRO is specified for over 30-years of archival storage and will survive repeated 48-inch drops as well as accidental exposure to other environmental conditions that might be encountered by ENG professionals.

Ruggedness
REV PRO is designed to handle the rigorous needs of day-to-day field use by broadcasters and video professionals. It allows for use in temperature ranges between -10C to 60C (14F to 140F), can be used at altitudes up to 4,500m (+14,700ft), allows for 2,000 cartridge insertions on each piece of media and 15,000 for the drive, and has excellent vibration handling through enhanced shock mounting within the drive.

Security
The REV PRO security system is a password-based scheme analogous to physical locks. First, there is a User password (and password hint phrase) that can be created by the user, such as the cameraman, at the time of recording and that must later be entered to access the content. This is the same as having an individual key assigned only to you for the lock on your office door, required to gain access. At a higher level there is a Master password which is acts as a "master key." A station group could set a Master password on all of their media to allow them access in the event that the User password is forgotten or otherwise not available.

The User Password (when set) is used to gain access to the content and this access is valid until the disk is removed and/or power is reset to the REV Pro Drive. If the User Password is lost or forgotten, the Master Password can be used to remove the access protection by eliminating the User Password completely in order to gain access to the content. At that point access is always granted until another User Password is set.

A second aspect of security is the REV Pro Shred feature. Similar to a long format operation and featuring a multi-pass mode, Shred is a true erasure of the entire disk such that users can reuse or redistribute the REV PRO media without concern for valuable content getting into the wrong hands.
